Downtown Cocktail Room, a long-standing establishment in Las Vegas, will be closing its doors permanently next week after a 17-year run. The club’s owner, Michael Cornthwaite, attributes the closure to the lingering effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, which severely impacted the business’s revenue.

Cornthwaite, who now resides in Centennial, Colorado, expressed his disappointment in the club’s inability to bounce back from the pandemic-induced shutdown in 2020. He noted that while the club saw its best years in 2018 leading into 2019, post-COVID reopening has seen a decline in revenue as people seem to be drinking less and going out less frequently.

Despite the bustling nightlife scene on Fremont East, where alcohol consumption seems to fuel social activities, Cornthwaite observed a shift in social norms, with a trend away from exclusive alcoholic beverages as the centerpiece of social life for younger demographics. He acknowledged that he may no longer be in tune with the preferences of the current neighborhood crowd.

DCR, which opened in 2007 as part of the revitalization efforts spearheaded by Downtown Project founder Tony Hsieh, was a pioneer in the Fremont East neighborhood. The club played a significant role in attracting businesses to the area and fostering a sense of community among local residents.

While bidding farewell to DCR, Cornthwaite remains actively involved in real estate ventures in the Arts District and other projects outside of Las Vegas. Reflecting on his decision to close the club, he emphasized the importance of knowing when it’s time to move on from a project and explore new opportunities.

As Downtown Cocktail Room prepares to shut its doors for the last time, patrons and fans of the establishment have the opportunity to reminisce about the memories created within its walls. Despite the challenges faced by the club in recent years, its legacy as a unique and welcoming space in the heart of Las Vegas will undoubtedly be remembered by those who frequented it.
