In 2012, the Keep Memory Alive Power of Love gala honored Muhammad Ali on his 70th birthday. Larry Ruvo, the event’s co-founder, was already thinking about who they would honor the next year. When he saw Quincy Jones, he knew he had found their next spotlight. Ruvo took Jones to the Cleveland Clinic Lou Ruvo Center for Brain Health, where the money raised at the Power of Love supports research on memory loss and cognitive disorders.

During the tour of the clinic, Ruvo asked Jones if he would be willing to be honored at the next Power of Love event. Jones, who would turn 80 the following March, hesitated because his birthday was the same day as his friend Michael Caine’s. After a call to Caine, both men agreed to celebrate together in Las Vegas.

The 2013 event was star-studded with performances by Stevie Wonder, Bono, Jennifer Hudson, Carlos Santana, and many more. It was a night filled with music and laughter, with Amy Poehler and Arsenio Hall providing the comedic relief.

Ruvo and his wife had first met Jones during their honeymoon in Italy, and they had kept in touch over the years. Jones’ visit to the Cleveland Clinic was a testament to his support and generosity towards the cause.

The music industry may have lost a legend, but the Power of Love and Keep Memory Alive lost a true friend and supporter. Jones’ impact on the organization will always be remembered.
