Defending Champions: Bishop Gorman Girls Volleyball Ready for 5A State Title
The Bishop Gorman girls volleyball team is gearing up for the state semifinal in Northern Nevada after losing in five sets to Reno High in 2022. The Gaels missed out on defending their title last year, and they are determined to make sure history doesn’t repeat itself this season.
As the Southern Region champion and the No. 1 seed, Bishop Gorman is the heavy favorite to defend its state title in the Class 5A girls volleyball state tournament. The tournament kicks off on Friday night at Spanish Springs High School in Sparks.
The Gaels will face off against Reno, the No. 2 seed from the North, in the state semifinal at 7 p.m. Another exciting match to watch is between Coronado, the South’s No. 2 seed, and Northern champion Bishop Manogue at 5 p.m. The state championship match will take place at 10 a.m. on Saturday.
Coach Gregg Nunley expressed the team’s primary goal of winning another state championship. The Gaels have had an impressive season, not dropping a set against any local team. Nunley is confident that the tough competition they faced throughout the season has prepared them well for the upcoming matches.
Facing off against out-of-state teams like Mater Dei from California, who is currently ranked No. 2 in the country, has also helped Bishop Gorman hone their skills. Despite losing to Mater Dei in five sets, Nunley noted that the team’s strong defense and strategic offense were evident in that match.
Junior setter Trinity Thompson’s volleyball IQ and senior outside hitter Brooklynn Williams’ versatility have been critical to the team’s success. Their ability to adapt and lead the team has been instrumental in their journey to the state semifinals.
One player to watch out for is junior outside hitter Ayanna Watson, who leads the state in kills and has an impressive hitting percentage. Watson’s talent and leadership on the court have boosted the team’s confidence and performance.
In the 4A division, Durango seems poised to repeat as champions. The Trailblazers have dominated their opponents, not dropping a set against any 4A team. Their upcoming match against Rancho will be one to watch in the state semifinals at Sunrise Mountain.
Overall, the high school girls volleyball state tournaments promise to deliver some intense matches and fierce competition. Fans can look forward to exciting games and impressive performances from talented teams across different divisions.
