With a perfect record of 26-0, the Cougars are aiming to become only the second boys’ team in known records by the NIAA to finish the season undefeated with no ties, following in the footsteps of Tech in 2012. However, Coach Dustin Barton’s main focus remains on playing good soccer and clinching the championship title.
As the Southern League champion and the No. 1 seed, Coronado is heading into the Class 5A state semifinals as the clear favorite to defend their state title. Facing off against Wooster, the No. 2 seed from the North, the Cougars are determined to maintain their perfect record in the upcoming game.
Junior midfielder Cy Adams expressed the team’s excitement at the opportunity to potentially win back-to-back state championships and leave a lasting legacy in the history books. The players have shown pure domination on the field, outscoring opponents 158-9 and securing an impressive 19 shutouts throughout the season.
Key contributors like junior forward Dylan Flores and newcomer Gavin Flickinger have been instrumental in the team’s success, forming a formidable scoring duo. Flores has racked up 33 goals and 33 assists, while Flickinger leads the state with 56 goals and 35 assists in his debut season with Coronado.
