Las Vegas Rotary Club Supports Green Our Planet’s Hydroponic Program with $10,000 Donation
The Las Vegas Rotary Club has once again demonstrated its commitment to supporting education and sustainability by donating $10,000 to Green Our Planet’s “Hydro Connect” program. This generous contribution will fund the installation of a hydroponics program at Kermit R. Booker Elementary School, providing students with a hands-on learning experience in sustainable farming practices.
Hydro Connect is a program designed to promote STEM education and connect students with the science behind hydroponic farming. By utilizing hydroponic systems, which grow produce without soil or natural light using water, nutrient solutions, and LED grow lights, students will gain a deeper understanding of environmental stewardship and the importance of sustainable agriculture.
Toni Kern, president of the Las Vegas Rotary Club, expressed the organization’s pride in supporting Green Our Planet for the past three years. She emphasized that the donation is not just a financial contribution but an investment in the future of our children and the planet as a whole. Kern highlighted the power of collective action, stating, “It’s amazing what we can achieve when we come together for a common purpose.”
Empowering Education with Hydroponics
The Las Vegas Rotary Club’s donation has provided Kermit R. Booker Elementary School with 19 table-top hydroponics systems, a large commercial hydroponics system, and a comprehensive range of curricula. These resources cover various educational aspects, including K-12 Hydroponics STEM, MS-HS Health, K-12 Financial Literacy, and a culturally responsive hydroponics framework. By integrating hydroponics into the school curriculum, students will have the opportunity to engage in hands-on learning experiences that foster critical thinking and creativity.
Hydroponics offers a practical and efficient method of growing produce, particularly in urban settings where space is limited. By eliminating the need for soil and natural light, hydroponic systems can be utilized year-round, providing a sustainable solution for food production. The systems require minimal upkeep compared to traditional gardens, making them an ideal educational tool for teaching students about resource conservation and sustainable practices.
Supporting Youth Empowerment and Sustainability
Green Our Planet’s mission aligns with the Las Vegas Rotary Club’s dedication to supporting organizations that empower youth through education and life skills development. By engaging students in the process of growing and selling produce, Green Our Planet fosters entrepreneurship and financial literacy among young learners. The semi-annual student farmer’s market hosted by Green Our Planet allows students to showcase the fruits of their labor and learn valuable lessons in marketing, sales, and financial management.
The profits generated from the student farmer’s market are reinvested back into school garden programs, creating a sustainable cycle of growth and learning. This initiative not only benefits the students directly involved but also contributes to the overall sustainability of the school community. By instilling a sense of responsibility towards the environment and community, Green Our Planet and the Las Vegas Rotary Club are shaping the next generation of environmentally conscious and socially responsible leaders.
In conclusion, the collaboration between the Las Vegas Rotary Club and Green Our Planet exemplifies the power of partnerships in promoting education, sustainability, and community engagement. Through initiatives like the Hydro Connect program, students are equipped with the knowledge and skills needed to thrive in a rapidly changing world. As we look towards the future, it is essential to continue investing in programs that empower youth and promote environmental stewardship.
