North Las Vegas Councilman Scott Black, the dude who wants to be the city’s next mayor, officially kicked off his campaign Thursday night at a packed restaurant with his crew by his side. He’s been holding it down in the five-member City Council since 2017, making moves and taking names.

Mayor Pamela Goynes-Brown, the former council member and the first Black mayor in Nevada’s history who got elected in 2022, can’t run again because of term limits. She’s all about Team Black and gave him the stamp of approval at the event. She said, “Scott’s goal and his job, I hope, is to carry that torch; keep that momentum moving up the line.”

If Black comes out on top, he’s only getting one shot at wearing the mayoral crown. He’s all about North Las Vegas, proudly claiming that he and his wife are true locals, raising their daughter in the city. He told the Las Vegas Review-Journal, “I’m invested here.”

The candidate filing window opens up in March for a two-week period. Black is all about continuing the work he’s been doing and keeping the positive vibes flowing. He said, “I’m proud of the work we’ve done, and I’m hopeful that I’ll be able to continue as the mayor and keep that momentum going.”

When it comes to what’s important, Black is all about public safety. He’s all about investing in a safe community, doing things like community outreach with the police and making sure the Fire Department is on point when emergencies pop up. He said, “Those are the things that are keenly important to me, that are always going to be a challenge, but a challenge that we’re certainly not shirking away from.”

North Las Vegas, the third-largest city in Nevada, is ready to grow and expand. Black is all about the residential development in different communities throughout the city, offering a variety of housing options for everyone.

Affordable housing is a big deal in the region, so Black is all about building units and partnering up with nonprofits to make sure people have a place to call home. He’s all about that value aspect, making sure there’s something for everyone in North Las Vegas.

The city has come a long way since facing bankruptcy back in 2013. Black is confident in the city’s ability to weather any economic storm that comes its way. North Las Vegas is diversifying its economy, thanks to developments like the Apex Industrial Park and its downtown revitalization.

Black is pumped about the city’s economic prospects, looking toward the future with high hopes for growth and success. He’s all about the diverse economic growth happening in the community, from small businesses to new hotels popping up.

Born in Henderson and raised in North Las Vegas, Black has been around the block. He did the whole church missionary thing after high school, then went on to get his degree in communications from UNLV. He later got his MBA from the University of Phoenix and had a solid career at UPS before starting a marketing firm with his wife.

Black loves the nonpartisan vibe of the City Council, where decisions made today can have an immediate impact on the community tomorrow. He’s all about making a difference in people’s lives, whether it’s fixing a pothole or addressing other issues in the city.

Not really sure why this matters, but Black is all in for the mayoral race, ready to take on the challenge and lead North Las Vegas to even greater heights. Maybe it’s just me, but I feel like he’s got what it takes to make a real difference in the city.
